Sleepless In Seattle? We Know M’s Fans
They’ve always seemed to be just there right? No Titles. No AL Pennants. It took them 15 years to achieve their first winning season in 1991. A few of the players that they’ve had, you could argue are bigger the baseball club itself! Not trying to be harsh on the ol’ M’s, but its no mystery that its been a struggle for success for most of their existence. Their “heyday” if you will, of course came when i was growing up in the late 90’s/early 2000’s. With no hardware to show for it however, you have to imagine ownership, and the city itself, is either desperate for something, or nearly hopeless at this point.
I know, lay off ’em Trav, they ran into that stellar ’95 Cleveland squad, and then the Yankees, they have the AL record for most wins in a season in 2001 with a whopping 116. Multiple bonafide first ballot Hall of Famers under a Mariners contract during their “golden era”. We all watched Griffey Jr. bloom before our very eyes in Seattle. We watched prime Randy Johnson, which, in some peoples opinions, is the best anyone’s ever pitched in the modern era. The prodigy kid that exceeded all expectations, Alex Rodriguez. Arguably the most underrated hitter of the modern era, big Edgar Martinez. Arguably the greates hitter of all time, Ichiro. King Felix! I mean wow. All of them cornerstone household names that either made or started their legacy, in Seattle.
You could say that every one of those monumental names careers, has a higher prestige and impact on the game, than the Seattle Mariners organization themselves. The reality of it, and Seattle fans, their rivals fans, and neutrals alike, can all agree that the Seattle Mariners have still not had “that” moment, and “that” moment, doesn’t necessarily have to be a title. Their 116 win season was amazing no doubt, but it was an incredibly underachieving, disappointing ending. It has to be a very sour taste in longtime M’s fans mouths. They deserve something. Anything.
To be fair, for the time being the future looks relatively bright in Seattle. Manager Scott Servais has done a decent job considering what hes had, and now have a decent young core with JP Crawford and Kyle Lewis, vets having good years with Seager and Haniger, and Justus Sheffield and Chris Flexen looking like the next 1-2 punch in the starting rotation in the future. Do they need more? youre darn right. but its trending up Seattle.
